Fuzzwich
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Fuzzwich was a Palo Alto company in Y Combinator's Summer 2007 batch, founded by Devin Hunt, that built a dead-simple web app for creating and publishing animated shorts. The animation editor came pre-populated with music, backgrounds and cartoon characters, and users could insert photos of themselves; the company also offered a second tool, Minivid.
02 / Fuzzwich FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
In a May 2024 interview, Fuzzwich/Habit Industries co-founder Rob Fitzpatrick (YC 2007) attributed the failure to pivoting into an enterprise entertainment sales model that looked good on paper but lacked team intrinsic motivation, burned a year learning hard-to-enter studio networks, then lost gatekeeper momentum after the 2008 financial crisis while locked into multi-year contracts.
Founder said the team pivoted to a spreadsheet-good enterprise entertainment model away from what they wanted to build.
Breaking into music/TV studio networks took about a year of credibility-building before major brand deals.
After 2008, investor/gatekeeper support dried up while the company was stuck in multi-year customer contracts.
