01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Astra Space was an Alameda, California rocket company founded in 2016 by Chris Kemp and Adam London, building low-cost expendable launch vehicles for small satellites and spacecraft propulsion systems. Its Rocket 3 program made six orbital attempts with two successes before being scrapped; in 2021 it acquired Apollo Fusion for its propulsion business, which sold hundreds of thrusters. It went public via a SPAC merger in February 2021 at a $2.1 billion valuation, then fell into financial distress and was taken private by its founders in 2024.

02 / Astra FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Astra's public-market story collapsed after repeated launch failures — only two of six Rocket 3 orbital attempts succeeded, including a failed NASA TROPICS mission in June 2022. The company defaulted on its debt agreement in November 2023 and faced delisting; in March 2024 the founders took it private at about $11.25 million, saying the deal was the 'only alternative' to filing for bankruptcy. Importantly, the company did not liquidate: it survived as a private company, raised $80 million in 2025 and was seeking $250 million at a $1 billion valuation in 2026 to develop Rocket 4, so no confirmed terminal event exists for this record.
