01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
WigWag was an Austin-based IoT startup founded around 2012-2013 by CEO Ed Hemphill. It built an open-source IoT platform based on its deviceJS runtime (JavaScript on Node/V8) that 'glued together' competing smart-home protocols - Belkin WeMo, Sonos, Nest, Philips Hue, ZigBee, Bluetooth, Z-Wave - through the WigWag Relay hub, sensor blocks and LED light strips. It raised $3.175 million in seed funding led by CSC Venture Capital (Feb 2016) after a 2013 Kickstarter that blew past its $50,000 goal, collecting over $454,000 from 1,694 backers.
