01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

QualTek Services Inc., based in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania and founded in 2012 (backed by Brightstar Capital Partners), was a leading infrastructure-services provider for 5G wireless, telecom, wireline/fiber, power-grid modernization, renewables and recovery sectors. It grew by acquisition (BACOM, Concurrent, Fiber Network Solutions, Aerial Wireless Services, Velocitel and others) into one of the wireless industry's largest turnkey contractors, and went public in 2021 via a merger with Roth CH Acquisition.

02 / QualTek Services FAILURE REASONS

Why it failed

The post-Covid slowdown in wireless and telecom capital spending left QualTek overleveraged and unprofitable. On May 24, 2023, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Southern District of Texas to restructure its debt, emerging on June 30, 2023 with debt reduced by about $307 million, pre-emergence equity shares canceled, and the company privately held by its prepetition lenders and management. Former public shareholders saw their equity wiped out; the company was later acquired by Atlas Holdings and renamed InfraServices Group.
