01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
XetHub was a Seattle-based startup founded in 2021 by Yucheng Low, Ajit Banerjee, and Rajat Arya, engineers who had worked on Apple's internal machine-learning infrastructure. It gave enterprises Git-like version control for machine-learning datasets and models at terabyte scale, using content-defined chunking, deduplication, and instant repository mounting. Customers included Tableau and Gather AI. In August 2024 Hugging Face acquired the company; the XetHub platform was discontinued and its 14-person team joined Hugging Face to rebuild the Hub's storage backend.
02 / XetHub FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
XetHub's founder identified adoption friction and mistaken product assumptions: users did not want to move data or workflows, some target users did not value the problem as expected, and strong technology did not automatically translate into an accessible user experience.
Requiring users to move data or workflows created adoption resistance.
The team found that not every target user valued the problem as strongly as assumed.
Technical quality did not automatically make the product easy for users to experience.
