Volta Trucks
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Volta Trucks, founded in 2019 and headquartered in Sweden with most operations in the UK, built the Volta Zero: a purpose-built, fully electric 16-tonne truck designed for urban distribution, with a low central driving position for driver visibility. It also developed a 'Truck as a Service' bundled financing model - infrastructure, servicing and support for a monthly fee - and planned 7.5-, 12- and 18-tonne variants.
02 / Volta Trucks FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Volta's fate was sealed by its battery supplier: when U.S. supplier Proterra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2023, Volta had to slash the vehicle volumes it had forecast to produce, and the supplier uncertainty destroyed its ability to raise capital in an already difficult fundraising environment for EV players. The board filed for bankruptcy in Sweden and administration in England in October 2023, putting 850 jobs at risk.
