01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

OpTier, founded in New York in 2002 by former Memco Software and Compuware executives (chairman Israel Mazin, CEO Yori Lavi, CTO Amir Alon), built enterprise software for business transaction management (BTM) and application performance management. Its flagship CoreFirst platform and Active Context Tracking technology gave IT teams end-to-end visibility into business transactions across all infrastructure tiers - web and application servers, legacy systems and databases - so they could guarantee service levels for critical business processes. It raised about $118 million from Carmel Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Pitango Venture Capital.

02 / OpTier FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Gartner research VP Jonah Kowall wrote that having raised well over $100 million in nine years, OpTier 'never kept pace with the changes in the market.' Its technology was built for the website era: implementing meaningful transaction monitoring took months, while newer competitors delivered the same capability in hours. The iPhone and the mobile shift also made its website-centric approach obsolete, and the company lacked the capital to re-position for the new market.
