01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
EDJX was a Raleigh, North Carolina edge computing platform company led by cloud industry veterans John Cowan and James Thomason. Its platform made it easy to write edge and IoT applications using serverless computing, accelerate content delivery, increase the responsiveness of edge applications, and secure edge data at the source — serving real-world edge workloads including industrial IoT, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and robotics. It offered serverless, CDN, DNS, and object storage capabilities over a peer-to-peer federated mesh (EdjBlock), with Cyxtera as an early deployment partner, and partnered with the Autonomy Institute on intelligent-infrastructure pilots. The company raised about $15 million, including a $3 million round led by Intersouth Partners, and appointed Benjamin Thomas as CEO.
02 / EDJX FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
Investor VCapital states EDJX’s financial challenges were worsened by Right Forge’s default on a ~$7.2M/3-year contract after EDJX spent ~$1M on servers with no resulting revenue; board–founder personal dynamics were called an insurmountable obstacle; salvage/merger efforts failed before bankruptcy (total loss).
