01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
NetBooks, Inc. built web-based financial and business management software for small businesses, including double-entry bookkeeping, invoicing, inventory management, contact management, and bill and expense management. Founded in San Francisco in 2006 by Ridgely Evers — who set out to build a more user-friendly alternative to Intuit's QuickBooks — the company charged small businesses a monthly subscription. In mid-2009 it rebranded itself and its flagship product as WorkingPoint, to disassociate from the product category of small laptop computers also called netbooks. It was later acquired and continued as an operating subsidiary.
