01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Scout Bio was a Philadelphia biotechnology company founded in 2016 as a University of Pennsylvania spinout, co-founded by gene therapy pioneer James Wilson of Penn's Gene Therapy Program. It harnessed the genetic revolution transforming human medicine to deliver the future of veterinary medicine: one-time AAV-based gene therapies for major chronic pet conditions — chronic kidney disease, chronic pain and atopic dermatitis — delivered via a single intramuscular injection that induced long-term expression of therapeutic proteins. Scout raised over $60 million, including a $9.3 million round led by Frazier Healthcare Partners, a $20 million Series B co-led by Digitalis Ventures' Companion Fund and RiverVest Venture Partners, and a $33 million Series B2 led by OrbiMed.
