Hashtag Pirate
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Hashtag Pirate, built by Nicolas Elec Attallah, was an Instagram hashtag search engine. It was unique in letting users find very targeted posts — for travel, business or leisure — by entering two hashtags into a search bar and seeing only posts that contained both hashtags in their captions. Nicolas, an IT support engineer who quit his job to build online businesses, hired a freelance developer to build the product and focused on SEO to grow it.
02 / Hashtag Pirate FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Hashtag Pirate failed because it depended entirely on a third party: Instagram (Facebook) changed its API in June 2016 and blocked search requests, destroying the core of the service. In a Failory interview founder Nicolas said the shutdown was out of his control — he had not even started monetizing with ads when the API change killed the product.
