Phind
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Phind was a San Francisco AI company founded in 2022 by Michael Royzen and Justin Wei (Y Combinator S22). It built an AI search engine for developers — an answer engine that browsed the web and technical documentation to answer coding questions with code examples and cited sources, plus a VS Code extension. It trained its own code models, briefly holding the top-ranked open-source coding model on Hugging Face, with models that reportedly beat GPT-4 on HumanEval.
02 / Phind FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Phind shut down abruptly on January 16, 2026, just over a month after raising $10 million from Bessemer Venture Partners (December 2025). The company did not publicly disclose reasons for the sudden closure; independent analysis points to ferocious competition in the AI coding-tools market, the high inference costs of a subscription consumer product, and insufficient traction to sustain it. Co-founder Michael Royzen has since founded Standard Signal (YC P26).
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Service shut down
Phind ended search operations on 16 January 2026. Users were told that paid subscriptions would be refunded proportionally and that data could be downloaded until 30 January.
