Lordstown Motors (Detailed)
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Lordstown Motors was an electric-vehicle startup building the Endurance, a full-size electric pickup truck with hub motors in each wheel, targeted at commercial fleet buyers. Founded by Steve Burns in Ohio, it bought a shuttered General Motors plant in Lordstown to manufacture the truck, went public via a 2020 SPAC merger at a $5 billion peak valuation, and raised $1.7 billion in funding — then delivered only 31 trucks before running out of cash.
02 / Lordstown Motors (Detailed) FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
Lordstown's collapse was a compounding of manufacturing inexperience and capital-market missteps. Development setbacks — a prototype fire in 2021, repeated production delays, and a February 2023 recall of every Endurance built over an electrical-connection defect — meant it never reached scale. The CEO and CFO resigned in 2021; GM sold its stake. The company bet its survival on Foxconn, selling it the Ohio plant and signing a promised $170 million investment; when Foxconn refused to follow through (citing the stock's collapse below $1), Lordstown sued for breach of contract and bad faith and filed Chapter 11 on June 27, 2023. Market cap had fallen from $5 billion to about $30 million.
