Purplebricks
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Purplebricks was a UK online estate agency founded in 2012 by brothers Michael and Kenny Bruce. It charged home sellers a fixed upfront fee instead of a percentage commission, marketing itself as a hybrid disruptor of traditional high-street agencies. Floated on London's AIM market in 2015, it peaked at a valuation of about £1.4 billion.
02 / Purplebricks FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Failed international expansions in Australia and the United States burned through cash reserves and produced a £19.2 million group loss in 2020. The share price collapsed by more than 98% from its peak, and by early 2023 the company expected annual EBITDA losses of £15-20 million with liabilities near £10 million. Put up for sale in February 2023, it was bought by rival Strike for a nominal £1 in June 2023 in a solvent-rescue deal that transferred its debts and took it off the stock market.
