BitMEX
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
BitMEX was a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed, operated by HDR Global Trading Limited. It pioneered the perpetual swap - the contract that became the dominant instrument in crypto derivatives - and at its 2019 peak traded over $1 trillion a year, about 57% of global crypto-derivatives market share, with daily turnover exceeding 1 million bitcoins. After years of regulatory battles (US charges against its founders in 2020, a $100M settlement in 2021) and eroding market share, it announced its closure in July 2026 following a strategic review, ending trading, deposits and new positions on September 23, 2026 after an 11-year run. Withdrawals remain open; customers can still log in and withdraw balances.
02 / BitMEX FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
BitMEX was killed by its own invention. Perpetual futures worked so well that every serious derivatives venue - Binance, Bybit, OKX, Hyperliquid - copied them, and BitMEX's share of Bitcoin futures volume collapsed to about 0.08%. It could not compete on liquidity, listings breadth or regulatory flexibility with either the big centralized exchanges or the new decentralized perps platforms. The 2020 US criminal charges against its founders (anti-money-laundering violations) forced compliance costs and reputational damage that never healed. There is no indication of insolvency - the company says customer assets exceed liabilities and withdrawals stay open - just a strategic decision: the exchange had become historically important but commercially marginal in the market it created.
03 / EVENT HISTORY

The same notice sets Closure Time at 23 September 2026 04:00 UTC, after which BitMEX will provide no further exchange services other than holding unwithdrawn balances; remaining positions are force-closed.

Overall assessment: Not completed
05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Inventors do not own the invention: perpetual swaps made BitMEX, then everyone copied them.
- 02
Liquidity is everything in derivatives: once the order book thins, the exchange dies slowly.
- 03
Regulatory fights compound: the 2020 charges bled reputation and money for years.
- 04
When your share hits 0.08%, the strategic review writes itself: exit with dignity.
- 05
Keep customer funds safe on the way out: open withdrawals turned a closure into a wind-down, not a scandal.
