Imzy
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Imzy was a Salt Lake City social network founded by former Reddit employees Dan McComas and Jessica Moreno, positioned as a friendlier alternative to Reddit. Launched publicly in fall 2016, it offered Reddit-style threaded communities with strict conduct rules - unregistered users could not comment - and grew to tens of thousands of users across more than 6,000 communities. The company raised about $11 million in venture funding. On May 24, 2017 McComas announced the site would shut down on June 23, 2017, saying the platform had not found its place in the market.
02 / Imzy FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Imzy's founders said the platform could not find its place in the market: tens of thousands of users across more than 6,000 communities were not enough to sustain a new general-purpose social network competing against entrenched incumbents like Reddit and Facebook. The kindness-first differentiator attracted attention but did not translate into enough user migration or engagement density to justify continued investment.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Before launching a challenger to an entrenched social platform, test whether the core differentiator - here, friendliness and stricter conduct rules - actually drives user migration rather than just positive press coverage.
- 02
Grow one thriving community deeply before scaling to thousands: Imzy reached more than 6,000 communities but lacked the engagement density to be self-sustaining.
- 03
When product-market fit is clearly absent, winding down with cash still in the bank, as Imzy did, preserves team capital and credibility for the next attempt.
- 04
Communicate a shutdown promptly and commit to protecting user data; Imzy gave users a month to export content and said user data would not be sold.
