01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Compass is a US real estate technology company that built an agent platform and acquired top-performing brokerages and agents with high commission splits and large signing bonuses, growing into one of the largest residential brokerages in the country before listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021. In 2022, as mortgage rates spiked and home sales froze, it lost hundreds of millions of dollars, cut about 10 percent of staff in June, halved its technology team, and saw its stock fall from over $20 to under $3. The company is still operating, so this is a struggle case rather than a closure.
