01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Picurio was a Mountain View, California photo-sharing startup from Y Combinator's Winter 2009 batch that made sharing photos between large groups simple. Users uploaded photos to a web 'room' (about 2 GB of storage, with an iPhoto-like interface), invited friends via a shareable link, and everyone could contribute their own photos. It integrated with Facebook, allowed zip downloads, and stayed free as long as users kept adding friends to rooms ($4.95 extended a room by 30 days).
