01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Rockset was a real-time analytics database company founded in 2016 in San Mateo, California, by former Facebook engineers Venkat Venkataramani, Dhruba Borthakur and Tudor Bosman. Built on the open-source RocksDB key-value store they had helped create at Meta, its serverless platform continuously ingested data from Kafka, MongoDB, DynamoDB and S3, then indexed it for sub-second SQL queries over semi-structured data with no predefined schema — powering recommendation engines, logistics dashboards, chatbots and anomaly detection for enterprises in fintech and e-commerce. It raised over $105 million from investors including Sequoia Capital and Greylock. On June 21, 2024, OpenAI acquired Rockset in a stock deal valued at a few hundred million dollars to power its retrieval infrastructure, and the team joined OpenAI.
