01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Bionic was an application security posture management (ASPM) startup founded in May 2019 by Idan Ninyo and Eyal Mamo, with Israeli roots and headquarters in Palo Alto. It built a 'Google Maps for your apps': a platform giving security teams a bird's-eye view of a company's applications and APIs - mapping architectures and dependencies, and automating the detection, contextualisation and prioritisation of application-security risks without interfering with development. Its customers included Chipotle, Freddie Mac, Transamerica, Aston Martin and HPE. It raised $82 million over three rounds (Seed 2019, Series A $17M in 2020, Series B $65M in March 2022) from Insight Partners and Battery Ventures. In September 2023 CrowdStrike acquired Bionic for a reported $350 million to marry ASPM with its cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP); the founders and team joined CrowdStrike to lead a cloud-security business unit.
