01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Cam.ly was an Austin, Texas-based startup making wifi cameras that streamed and stored video in the cloud. The company bought commodity IP cameras from China, modified their firmware, and built a Rails-based web video hosting service that connected to the cameras. Positioned as an affordable alternative to Dropcam (later Google Nest Cams), it marketed to consumers through Reddit, Hacker News and product-review stunts such as a live-streamed pinata-busting machine.

02 / Cam.ly FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Cam.ly failed because it never built a polished, consumer-friendly product. The cameras worked for the two hacker founders but were a hassle for ordinary users to set up, and electronics reviewers declined to write reviews because the product was not ready for consumers. The founders tried to go from zero to a consumer-ready product on a thin friends-and-family angel round, splitting their time between building and fundraising instead of finishing one first. Their Y Combinator application was rejected, and better-connected, better-funded competitors like Dropcam won the market. Without a compelling product to convince investors, the company could not raise a follow-on round and shut down.
