KWOTA
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Kwota was a Tallinn, Estonia-based cleantech startup founded by CEO Rain Vaana. It aimed to establish a global standard to validate and trade carbon emissions savings from using recycled materials in production, flipping carbon-credit economics from 20-80 in favor of consultants to 80-20 in favor of carbon reducers. It planned to use NFT and Web3 technologies to give recycled materials a digital footprint guaranteeing transparency of carbon savings reporting and trading. It raised a €1.5 million pre-seed round in April 2022 led by Change Ventures.
02 / KWOTA FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
founder Rain Vääna said KWOTA filed its own bankruptcy petition because restructuring (saneerimine) did not deliver the needed sales result; despite operating in 19 countries, the company could not secure the next funding round required for growth, amid funding difficulties and rapid sector change.
