01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
GazeHawk was a Mountain View, California startup founded in 2009 by Brian Krausz and Joe Gershenson, backed by Y Combinator's Summer 2010 batch, 500 Startups, Justin Yoshimura, Aaron Iba and Reinmkr Capital. It offered low-cost eye-tracking technology for usability studies and ad evaluation: its computer-vision software used ordinary webcams to determine where volunteers were looking on their screens, enabling fast, affordable in-home eye-tracking studies at scale. In March 2012 Facebook acquired the GazeHawk team in a talent acquisition; the product and technology were not part of the deal and remained independent.
