01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Sofetch was an Armenian beauty-services marketplace founded in 2019 by Margaret (Maggie) Ryan Rostamian with her sister and best friend—an all-women team. It was an all-in-one platform connecting three sides of the beauty market: customers, beauty technicians (stylists), and salon space owners, aiming to be the most convenient and cost-effective way of hosting, providing and receiving beauty services. Revenue came from a flat transaction fee on customer bookings (a competitive advantage over percentage-based commissions). It won first place and a $25,000 grant at the Neruzh diaspora startup program and was selected for the Grind category at the Startup Grind Global Conference in February 2020.
02 / Sofetch FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
COVID-19 killed the launch. As the team was preparing the app's release in early 2020, the pandemic disrupted the beauty industry; the founder tried pivoting, but nothing worked, and the team decided to shut down and move on.
