01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Joystream is an open-source, blockchain-based decentralized video platform and protocol, initiated by the Norwegian company Jsgenesis (founded 2014 by Bedeho Mender, Ph.D. in computational neuroscience from Oxford). Development began in 2015, initially exploring BitTorrent before pivoting to blockchain in 2018. It runs on a custom Layer 1 proof-of-stake blockchain (Substrate-based) with a DAO — governed via the Pioneer app where token holders vote on proposals and elect councils. Multiple video apps (e.g. Atlas, Gleev) run on a shared content layer: videos uploaded on one app are viewable across all. Creators monetize via the native JOY token (rewards, governance, NFTs, staking), video NFTs with royalties and channel-specific creator tokens. The mainnet launched in 2023 and the network remains active.
