01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Picwing was a San Francisco photo startup from Y Combinator's Summer 2008 batch. It launched as a social digital picture frame ($249, 7-inch, running Flash on Linux) that received photos wirelessly by email, then pivoted to a subscription photo-printing service: users sent full-resolution photos from their phones, and Picwing automatically printed and mailed them to up to six recipients every two weeks (from about $5 per month per recipient).
