01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Husslup was a Los Angeles professional network for the entertainment industry, founded in 2021 by H Schuster. An invite-only platform, it connected 15,000 creative freelancers, reps and executives — over 68% self-identifying as diverse — with the 50+ studios and production companies (including NBCU, AGBO and Keshet) hiring them, offering AI-driven staffing tools, profiles with credits and samples, and career-development events. It raised $2.62 million from Comcast NBCUniversal LIFT Labs (Techstars), Ulu Ventures, Fuel Capital and others.

02 / HUSSLUP FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Husslup went on an indefinite hiatus in October 2024 because the entertainment industry collapsed around it: the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes plus the post-streaming-wars contraction wiped out production jobs, and LA entertainment employment hit a 30-year low. With studios laying off staff, Husslup could not drive revenue or raise money, and founder/CEO H Schuster told users the company could not survive the challenging time.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Do not build a marketplace whose demand depends on a single industry's hiring cycle; when Hollywood stopped hiring, Husslup's model broke.

  2. 02

Raise before the downturn: the post-strike contraction made fundraising impossible at exactly the wrong time.

  3. 03

An indefinite hiatus is a shutdown in practice; communicate it honestly and help users export their data.
