Hush
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Hush was a US mobile shopping app launched in January 2016, built by three young male founders. It started as a curated products feed; when users turned out to buy nothing except makeup, the all-male team doubled down on the data and pivoted the app into makeup retail. The company shut down after failing to make the pivot work.
02 / Hush FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Hush never found a product people would buy on their phones: the original products feed sold nothing, and the makeup pivot failed too, as an all-male founding team could not convincingly sell and merchandise products bought predominantly by women. The shutdown was documented in the founders' own post-mortem.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Follow the data, but also the customer: the team pivoted to makeup but could not relate to the buyers.
- 02
Founder-market fit matters: a team that does not understand its core customer cannot merchandise for them.
- 03
Validate willingness to pay on mobile before building the full storefront.
