What the company did
Exscientia was an Oxford-based AI drug discovery company founded in 2012 as a spin-out from the University of Dundee by biophysicist Andrew Hopkins. Its AI platform automated target identification, novel compound design, translational models, and patient selection, mimicking human creativity to design medicines from large datasets. It was the first company to get AI-designed drug candidates into clinical trials (an OCD medicine entering human testing in Japan in 2020), partnered with pharma giants including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Bayer, and Sanofi, went public in 2021, and surpassed $1 billion in total funding.
