01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

MatchesFashion was a British luxury online retailer founded in 1987 by Tom and Ruth Chapman as a London boutique, pioneering online luxury fashion. Apax Partners owned it from 2017; Frasers Group acquired it for 52 million pounds in December 2023. After continued losses and missed targets, administrators (Teneo) were appointed on March 8, 2024, putting nearly 1,000 creditors and over 270 jobs at risk. Frasers later bought back certain Matches intellectual property assets, and new owners announced a 2026 relaunch.

02 / MatchesFashion FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

MatchesFashion was undone by persistent losses that neither private-equity ownership nor a discount owner could fix. In the year to January 2023 it lost 33.5 million pounds; after Frasers Group bought it for 52 million pounds in December 2023 it kept missing business targets, failed to pay brands on time, and burned through further Frasers funding. Frasers concluded the funding needed to stabilize the business was far beyond what it considered viable, and the directors put the group into administration on March 8, 2024, barely two months after the acquisition.
