01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
BarSense was a Y Combinator Winter 2012 company based in Mountain View, California, that pitched itself as the 'kid's first smartphone with web-based parental controls.' Its app, called Kyte, could be installed on any Android phone and locked the child into an approved environment: pre-approved calls, authorized games only, and no way to leave the app to reach the rest of the phone. Parents controlled everything from a browser - turning off SMS and social media during school hours, banning apps at bedtime, monitoring internet usage, setting game time limits, checking call history and tracking GPS location in real time.
