01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
FlexCharging was a Redmond, Washington-based energy software company founded in 2017 by longtime Microsoft engineer Brian Grunkemeyer. Its cloud-based managed charging platform used EV telematics data to help utilities, retail energy providers and fleets optimize electric vehicle charging around grid congestion, renewable energy availability and electricity pricing — turning EVs into grid-friendly behind-the-meter assets while cutting charging costs and carbon emissions for drivers. It raised nearly $6.5 million, with Accurant International as lead investor. In January 2025 Accurant acquired FlexCharging through its subsidiary FlexEnergi, folding its technology into a grid-aware demand response and virtual power plant platform.
