01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
BirchAI was a Seattle-based GenAI startup spun out of the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) in June 2020 by CEO Kevin Terrell, CTO Yinhan Liu (a RoBERTa co-author and NLP pioneer) and COO Sumant Kawale. Its cloud-based platform used transformer-based natural language processing to streamline customer support for healthcare companies - summarising, classifying and analysing phone conversations for medical device, pharmaceutical and insurance firms, so highly-trained staff would stop spending half their day writing call summaries. Backed by Radical Ventures, AI2, Flare Capital Partners and WRF Capital, it raised $3.1 million in seed funding in January 2022. On March 26, 2024 Sagility LLC - a technology-enabled healthcare services provider - acquired BirchAI to fold its generative-AI call technology into services for large national payers, Blues plans, health systems and medical-device companies.
