01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Obsesh was an Oakland, California-based creator marketplace platform for sports. Founded by female entrepreneurs and athletes Tracy Benson (formerly of Home Depot and Best Buy) and Jonalyn Morris (formerly of Beats by Dre and Disney Interactive), it let athletes monetize their skills, name, image, and likeness: fans could book top athletes for training, tips, and professional feedback in a few taps on their phone, with athletes keeping 75% of each transaction. The marketplace also extended into esports and gaming, letting fans face off against sports personalities in video games. In October 2021, it closed a $1 million pre-seed round from Stadia Ventures, YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley, Crosscut Ventures, Paul Bricault of Greycroft and Amplify.LA, and Nations Ventures. No shutdown, bankruptcy, or acquisition has been publicly documented.
