01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Grab Holdings is Southeast Asia's super-app company, founded in 2012 in Malaysia as MyTeksi by Anthony Tan: ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery, and financial services across eight countries. It listed on Nasdaq in December 2021 via a record $40 billion SPAC merger, then saw its stock fall about 75 percent as tech shares sold off and losses mounted — $3.56 billion lost in 2021 alone. The company responded with hiring freezes, senior pay freezes, and cost cuts, and later cut about 11 percent of staff in 2023. It is still operating, so this is a struggle case rather than a closure.
