DocTalk
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
DocTalk was a Mumbai-based health-tech startup founded in 2016 by Akshat Goenka, Vamsee Chamakura and Krishna Chaitanya Aluru, backed by Matrix Partners and Y Combinator. Its mobile app connected patients with doctors after their first in-person visit: users could chat with their doctors, obtain prescriptions and share new reports. Patients paid a subscription fee to communicate with their doctor, and doctors were charged an initiation fee.
02 / DocTalk FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
DocTalk folded after a failed business-model pivot. Late in 2018, the company bet on transitioning from its doctor-patient engagement model into the electronic medical record (EMR) business, spinning the new product out under a separate brand, Pulse India, led by two of the three co-founders. The pivot never delivered the acceleration the business needed: co-founder Akshat Goenka stepped down as CEO, nearly 100 employees were laid off, and in 2019 the company shuttered its entire health-tech operation. The founders returned the remaining capital to investors.
