StumbleUpon
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
StumbleUpon was a web-discovery service founded in November 2001 by Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith, Justin LaFrance, and Eric Boyd while Camp was in graduate school at the University of Calgary. Its 'Stumble!' button opened a semi-random website or video matched to the user's interests - an early like button, news feed, and social voting system before social media existed. At its peak it served nearly 60 billion stumbles to 40 million users and once drove more publisher traffic than YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, and Google combined. eBay bought it for $75 million in May 2007; the founders bought it back in 2009 and relaunched it as a venture-backed startup. Co-founder Garrett Camp announced its closure in May 2018; the site shut down on June 30, 2018 and accounts moved to Mix.com.
02 / StumbleUpon FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
StumbleUpon died because the internet moved on without it. Random content discovery lost to curated news feeds on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and to Pinterest and Reddit; StumbleUpon's user experience became outdated and its algorithm stale. Monetization made it worse: paid placements crowded out organic stumbles, and when the company pushed more ads to make money, users left because of the ads - a vicious cycle it never escaped. The eBay acquisition ($75 million, 2007) also failed to pan out: the partnership went nowhere and the founders bought the company back two years later.
