Areteia Therapeutics
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Areteia Therapeutics was a Chapel Hill, North Carolina biotech founded in 2022 to develop the first oral treatment for eosinophilic asthma: oral dexpramipexole, a twice-daily pill aimed at giving patients with inadequately controlled moderate-to-severe asthma greater control over their condition. It launched with a $425 million Series A led by Bain Capital Life Sciences — one of the largest startup bets in respiratory illness in recent biotech history.
02 / Areteia Therapeutics FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Areteia is winding down after terminating its Phase 3 asthma studies — an abrupt reversal just months after its Exhale-4 trial hit its primary endpoint in September 2025, which makes this one of the more dramatic late-2025 biotech shutdowns. Specific details of why the Phase 3 program was terminated have not been publicly disclosed.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
On 17 December 2025 Fierce Biotech reported that Chapel Hill clinical-stage asthma biotech Areteia Therapeutics is shuttering, citing Endpoints News (15 Dec 2025) that the board/management decided to shut down after a benefit-risk analysis; Exhale-2 and Exhale-3 were terminated on ClinicalTrials.gov because the benefit-risk profile no longer supported further development. Areteia’s own site states the Company is no longer operating and directs questions to VLPC (Areteia@vlpc.com) and asset inquiries to Rock Creek (sfrasier@rockcreekfa.com).
