Stadia
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Stadia was Google’s cloud gaming service, launched on 19 November 2019. It let players stream video games to phones, browsers and TVs without dedicated hardware, with a Stadia Pro subscription tier for higher-quality streaming and a store selling individual titles. The technology was widely praised, but the service never built a large audience.
02 / Stadia FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Stadia failed on strategy rather than technology: it never gained the user traction Google expected. The game library stayed under 300 titles with almost no exclusives, while the hybrid pricing — a monthly subscription plus full-price game purchases — compared poorly with subscription catalogues like Xbox Game Pass. Google closed its in-house game studios just 14 months after launch and deprioritized the consumer service in 2021, destroying developer and player trust before the shutdown was announced in September 2022.
