01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Returnly was a San Francisco startup founded in November 2014 by Eduardo Vilar that built digital return experiences and post-purchase payments for direct-to-consumer brands. Its signature product gave shoppers instant merchant credit when initiating a return, so they could order a replacement immediately while the return was still being processed. At its peak it served more than 1,800 merchants, processed over $1 billion in returns and was used by more than eight million shoppers. Affirm acquired it for about $300 million in May 2021, then wound the product down in October 2023.
