01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Riya Collective was a US-based rental fashion startup founded in April 2019 by MIT classmates Sarina Siddhanti and Arian Agrawal. It was pitched as a Rent the Runway for Indian fashion and wedding wear: formal saris, lehengas and anarkalis sourced from high-end Indian designer brands and consigned by past customers, rented to Indian women living in North America. It joined Y Combinator's Winter 2020 batch and raised about $2.08 million; at Demo Day it reported growing from $10,000 to $50,000 in monthly revenue in three months. The model later expanded into a social shopping platform for global, sustainable fashion. PitchBook lists it as out of business as of May 2022, but no shutdown announcement was found — its final status is unclear.
