Layer
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Layer was a communications platform founded in 2013 by Ron Palmeri and Tomaz Stolfa that let developers add iMessage-quality messaging to any mobile or web app. It won TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013, offered its infrastructure as a hosted service plus the open-source Atlas UI toolkit, and raised around $23 million, acquiring the interactive-messaging startup Cola in 2017.
02 / Layer FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
After Engagio acquired Layer, Head of Layer Shaun VanWeelden's customer email (quoted in full by GetStream on 25 Jul 2019) said the platform was being sunset because the buyer lacked staff to fix bugs, maintain SDKs, and support audits; a key infrastructure hire had died; and Layer was running at an unsustainable fixed infrastructure loss.
The sunset email stated Layer infrastructure costs were very high/fixed and the platform operated at an unsustainable loss.
Buyer lacked a team to diagnose bugs, keep SDKs current, and complete vendor audits.
The email cited the sudden death of the key hire running server operations/infrastructure.
