Refolo
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Refolo (real food love), founded by Lola Ojabowale, was a plant-based meal-planning app: for a $15 monthly subscription, users got customizable plant-based recipes that reminded them of home, with shoppable ingredients deliverable through services like Instacart and Amazon Prime. Ojabowale built the app herself — product, marketing and customer support — after starting it to help her father manage his diet following a cancer diagnosis.
02 / Refolo FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Refolo died of poor market fit, by the founder's own account: she spent two years selling a solution for a problem people were not spending money to solve. The target audience wanted plant-based meal plans, but most of the information was free and people were fine with what they could find. Early fake traction — programs and collaborations that looked like momentum — masked the missing repeatable process for finding paying users, and subscriptions never covered the business.
