01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
HighlightCam was a Y Combinator-backed mobile video-editing startup founded in 2009 by Michael J.T. O'Kelly, a MIT biophysics Ph.D., with Robert Neivert later joining as CEO. It began as a smart surveillance-camera concept — automatically flagging motion and sound changes in long recordings — and pivoted to consumer video: AI, facial recognition and objective-based algorithms that condensed long videos into pro-quality highlight reels with music, effects and titles. It released an API and the free iOS/Android app HighlightCam Social in 2011, and raised a $3 million Series A led by Quest Venture Partners (with NTT Docomo and Digital Garage) on top of seed funding from Y Combinator, 500 Startups and K9 Ventures.
