Thodex
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Thodex was a Turkish cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2017 by Faruk Fatih Özer at age 22. Riding Turkey's crypto boom — citizens turned to crypto as a hedge against runaway inflation — it became one of the country's largest digital-asset exchanges, with around 400,000 users. On April 22, 2021 the platform abruptly halted trading and withdrawals, blaming an 'abnormal fluctuation'; Özer instead boarded a flight from Istanbul to Albania and disappeared, leaving users unable to access roughly $2B in crypto assets, per prosecutors.
02 / Thodex FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Thodex's end was an exit scam, not a market failure: the founder froze withdrawals and fled with customers' assets rather than face insolvency or oversight. The scam worked because the exchange operated with minimal custody controls and users had no visibility into or claim on their deposits — once Özer disappeared, the platform simply went offline. The collapse also reflected Turkey's regulatory vacuum: crypto boomed as an inflation hedge while exchanges ran with little supervision. After a two-year manhunt, Özer was arrested in Albania in August 2022, extradited in April 2023, and in September 2023 sentenced (with his siblings) to 11,196 years in prison for fraud, money laundering and running a criminal organization. He was found dead in his Turkish prison cell in November 2025.
