Blue Note Therapeutics
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Blue Note Therapeutics was a San Francisco-based prescription digital therapeutics company founded in 2018, singularly dedicated to serving patients suffering from cancer-related distress. It merged clinical expertise with digital and gaming ideas to build clinically validated, prescription-only software intended to reduce anxiety, depression and other forms of cancer-related distress. Its lead product, Attune, was a mental health app for cancer patients, and it also released Attune Ensemble OTC, a free cancer well-being app, and received a breakthrough device designation for a prescription digital therapeutic for acute myeloid leukemia in 2022. The company partnered with The Oncology Institute and OncoHealth to reach patients.
02 / Blue Note Therapeutics FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
STAT reports Blue Note ran out of money in spring 2023 and laid off staff; after FDA’s January 2024 final denial of the Attune cancer-distress app for insufficient clinical evidence, CEO Geoff Eich said new trial data could not be funded, so FDA clearance—and thus a future—was unavailable.
FDA’s January 2024 response said trial evidence failed to show Attune helped patients and more data would be required for clearance.
STAT states the company had run out of money in spring 2023, let go all staff, and could not fund another study.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Blue Note raised about $47 million in funding but ran out of money in the spring of 2023 and let go all of its staff, betting its future on FDA clearance for Attune.
- 02
In January 2024 the FDA definitively denied clearance, ruling that the clinical evidence, including data from a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, failed to show that Attune helped patients, and that more data would be needed.
- 03
With no money for another study and venture funding for digital health dried up, CEO Geoff Eich dissolved the company in April 2024, consistent with the liquidation already recorded.
- 04
No reliable realized loss figure with clear subject, period and basis has been disclosed; funding raised is not a loss.
