Flip
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Flip, also known as Flip Shop, was a social commerce app that blended TikTok-style short video reviews with instant e-commerce. Shoppers discovered products through 60-second user-generated review videos, bought with one-click checkout and same-day shipping, and could become creators themselves, earning commissions when their reviews drove sales. It was founded in 2019 in Los Angeles by technology entrepreneur Noor Agha.
02 / Flip FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Flip's growth was bought with unsustainable incentives: steep referral rewards, free product giveaways and a $100 million creator equity fund. The payouts drove rapid user growth but revenue could never cover the cost of acquisition, and creators later complained payments were getting harder to secure. Meanwhile TikTok Shop became the dominant force in social commerce. Unable to make the economics work, Flip shut down in 2025.
