01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

ComplYant was a Los Angeles fintech building a digital tax assistant for small businesses - a platform helping SMB owners track, plan for, and file tax obligations to avoid penalties. In February 2022 it raised roughly $4M of new capital as part of a broader seed financing led by Craft Ventures, alongside Mucker Capital, Slauson & Co., and Techstars, bringing total funding to about $5.5M. The company shut down around 2023-2024 despite the multi-million-dollar seed funding.

Failure factors supported by the current evidence

Business Insider (29 Apr 2024), citing former employees and internal Slack/email, reports ComplYant never achieved product-market fit (never more than ~50 paying users), then missed payroll and had corporate cards locked before CEO Shiloh Johnson announced an immediate wind-down in September 2023.

No Product Market Fit

Former employees told BI ComplYant never developed product-market fit and never had more than 50 paying users despite a $9.99 starting price.

Cash Runway Exhausted

BI reports missed payroll after the July 2023 retreat, locked corporate cards on 19 Sep, then a wind-down video on the next payday.
