01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Bina Technologies was a Redwood City genome-analysis company founded in 2011 by Narges Bani Asadi, then a Stanford Ph.D. student (it emerged from stealth in May 2012). It built a big-data platform for centralised management and processing of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data: the Bina Box offered fast secondary genomic analysis, alignment and variant calling, and the company later expanded into tertiary analysis and the Genomic Management Solution (Bina-GMS) used by clinical and translational researchers - including the US Department of Veterans Affairs' Million Veteran Program. On December 19, 2014 it was acquired by Roche for an undisclosed sum and integrated into Roche Sequencing, with Bani Asadi calling it 'the best outcome that could have happened for our company'.
