01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tibit Communications was a Petaluma, California broadband-access startup founded in 2016 that developed microplug optical line terminal (OLT) technology: it combined PON-specific hardware and its own operating system into a micro pluggable transceiver that slots into a carrier-grade Ethernet switch, enabling rapid PON deployment in any environment — an open alternative to the closed, proprietary approaches of traditional OLT vendors. Its products supported 10G XGS-PON with development paths to 25G and higher speeds. Ciena, its largest investor since 2016 and its largest customer, announced a definitive agreement to acquire the remaining shares in early 2023 for approximately $210M, closing in Ciena's fiscal first quarter.
